Netflix’s Young, Famous & African is a back for a third season! Bold, glamorous reality series that brings the heat, drama, and opulence of Africa’s elite to the global stage. Created by Peace Hyde and Martin Asare Amankwa, this unscripted show follows a group of high-profile African celebrities as they navigate love, friendship, and career ambitions—all while living lavishly in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Plot Summary (No Spoilers!)
At its core, Young, Famous & African offers an inside look into the lives of some of the continent’s biggest stars from music, fashion, and entertainment. The show features a star-studded cast, including South African actress Khanyi Mbau (my fav) who was conspicuously MIA in this season, Nigerian fashion designer Swanky Jerry, Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz, Ugandan socialite Zari Hassan, and more new characters: Kefiliwe, Shakib and Ini entered scene. The series explores their relationships, personal struggles, and the challenges of maintaining their public image—all set against a backdrop of wealth, luxury, and power plays.
What Works Well
✅ Glamour & Aesthetic Appeal – The cinematography captures the extravagance of Africa’s entertainment industry, from breathtaking mansions to luxury cars and high-end fashion.
✅ Diverse & Charismatic Cast – Each personality brings something unique, from Khanyi’s fiery energy to Swanky Jerry’s larger-than-life fashion sense. The mix of different cultures from Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Ghana and Tanzania adds depth to the show.
✅ Unfiltered Drama – Fans of reality TV will love the heated confrontations, unexpected alliances, and emotional moments that unfold across the episodes.
✅ Showcases Africa’s Entertainment Power – Young, Famous & African challenges global stereotypes about Africa by highlighting its vibrant pop culture, entertainment scene, and affluent socialites.
Where It Falls Short
❌ Over-the-Top Drama – While entertaining, some conflicts feel exaggerated or scripted for the cameras, making it hard to tell how much is genuine.
❌ Lack of Deeper Storytelling – The show mainly focuses on luxury and drama but misses opportunities to explore more meaningful conversations about African identity, business struggles, or industry challenges or what actual friendships look like.
❌ Editing & Pacing Issues – Some episodes feel dragged out with unnecessary scenes, while others leave major plot points unresolved too quickly.
Other Online Views
The online community expressed concern over Annie's behavior, suggesting that her mental health may be unstable and questioning her necessity for the show.
It was an opportunity for Diamond to captivate his fans further by revealing his personality, and he certainly has a flair for drama! The playboy side of him emerged, which could be quite off-putting for those who take reality shows seriously!
Shakib calm and protective nature surprised everyone!
Naked and Kayleigh's trope is becoming monotonous.
Kefi & Ini the new characters on the block look promising for the show!
Final Verdict
If you love reality shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians or The Real Housewives, Young, Famous & African is a must-watch. It delivers high-class entertainment, explosive drama, and a refreshing African perspective on fame and success. While it sometimes leans too much into the “scripted reality” format (let Zari not fool you it is unscripted), it’s still a fun, binge-worthy escape into the world of Africa’s most influential stars.
⭐ Rating: 3.5/5 – Entertaining, glamorous, but could go deeper
