This year’s Fashion Revolution Week was more than a campaign; it was a call to action, a cultural revival, and a community-led movement. From April 22nd to 27th, Fashion Revolution Kenya hosted a powerful series of events that brought together creatives, changemakers, and conscious consumers under the theme Think Globally, Act Locally. The focus? Cultural sustainability, climate justice, and grassroots innovation in fashion.

A Pan-African Conversation on Culture and Climate

The week launched with a thought-provoking virtual event on April 23rd: Culture & Climate Change in Africa, co-hosted with Building African Fashion and the Fashion Revolution country teams from Nigeria and Uganda. With over 77 participants tuning in from across the continent, the discussion unpacked how deeply culture influences fashion consumption habits and environmental impact.

Speakers celebrated indigenous African traditions that have long embraced sustainability, such as using natural fibres, slow fashion principles, and circular design. The message was clear: Africa is not only impacted by climate change, but it also holds solutions within its cultural heritage.

“Threads of Connection”: A Celebration of Repair, Resilience, and Roots

The crescendo of the week arrived on April 26th at Televzyon Hub in Nairobi, with Threads of Connection, a dynamic cultural exchange between Sudanese and Kenyan creatives, hosted in partnership with Fashion Revolution Sudan. The event also honoured Mend in Public Day, transforming it into a vibrant, hands-on experience of repair and regeneration.

More than 125 participants immersed themselves in interactive stations that embodied the revolution’s values:

  • Garment Mending Station: Led by Tengeneza Café and The Swap Circle, this space saved dozens of garments from landfills while reviving repair skills and rethinking waste.

  • Weaving & Clothing Drive: In partnership with Africa Collect Textiles, attendees learned about textile recycling while contributing to circular fashion solutions.

  • Textile Storytelling Showcase: Eight Kenyan and Sudanese artists shared personal narratives through henna art, oral stories, and fabric installations, emphasizing heritage and identity.

  • Pop-Up Market & Art Zone: A curated space for local vendors, live poetry from Qwani youth, and a joyous Sudanese henna celebration.

  • Film Screening Corner: Short films transported audiences into tales of craft, resilience, and sustainability from across Africa.

  • Cultural Conversations: In-depth dialogue unpacked fashion’s intersection with justice, healing, and personal expression.

  • Children’s Art Zone: Even young creatives joined in, painting on fabric and engaging in playful, eco-conscious expression.

A Global Movement Rooted in Local Change

Fashion Revolution Week 2025 wasn’t just a Kenyan affair—it echoed the voices of over 80 countries participating globally. From mending cafés in Argentina to film screenings in Italy, the movement was united in vision: a fashion industry that prioritizes people and the planet over profit.

Sarah Jay, Executive Director of Fashion Revolution, captured this sentiment perfectly:

“The massive systemic changes needed to overhaul the global fashion industry begin at the community level: when we craft and mend together, when we assemble and organise together.”

Mutete Bakhita, Country Coordinator for Fashion Revolution Kenya, reflected on the week’s success:

“Fashion Revolution Week 2025 was about honouring our roots, exchanging knowledge, and building a future grounded in consciousness and shared values.”

Stitching the Future of Fashion

As Fashion Revolution Kenya wraps up another impactful campaign, the message is loud and clear: fashion can be a force for good—if we choose to act intentionally, collaboratively, and with deep respect for our environment and heritage.

To everyone who mended, marched, spoke, created, and dreamed alongside us—thank you. You’re the threads in the fabric of change.
