On the evening of May 6th, The Met Museum red carpet fashion was slain and awed among many emotions that played out on one the biggest night of the fashion calendar, the Met Gala 2019! This year’s theme is ‘Camp’ inspired by the writer Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on Camp". It outlines the framework for The Met Museum exhibition, and explores how the elements of irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion and celebrities were out to flaunt their ensembles on The Met Museum most memorable moments on the ombre pink carpet. From the scary and bizarre to bland and dazzling looks, our campiest picks were;
Nailing the ‘camp theme’ was Janelle Monae with a wearable art Christian Siriano gown showing off a beautiful marriage between sartorial duality(feminine-masculine) and high-tech fashion, with a functioning winking eye on the right and a black and white buttoned-up on the left dramatically gathering to the waist and stretching out as a ball-like dress accentuated with Dietrich-esque red-lip on white. It stole from historical art and fashion themes like cubism and eighteenth-century ball-dress designs which resembled everything she is bold, queer and chic and definitely in #Camp!
Leading by example Olympia’s mum aka Serena Williams, the co-chair of The Met brought her wedding habits to the red carpet and wore her autumn-blooming flowery yellow Versace number and matching yellow Nike X Off-White Air sneakers.
Ciara adorned her tall sexy classic self with an emerald green ostrich-feathered cut-out gown by Peter Dundas. But her wild big 'fro (that she has been spotted in a couple of times on the gram at magazine shoots like Vogue) was her big statement of the night that got high praise from other celebs like Khloe Kardashian calling a sista 'woke'. Also, being the first-time tweker on The Met pink carpet with Big Freedia later in the evening in a tamed cute twin bun was definitely Camp!
Move bih get out of the way, Cardi is here in a big vagina dress! Kulture’s mum once again was a red carpet highlight with a plush red Thom Browne gown trailing a circular structured long train that the pink carpet staircase had to be cleared to fit her trail! Reminds me of menstruation, Oh yeah it was actually an ode to menstruation. Campy huh?
The Cleveland Odell Beckham took to the carpet with a Thom Browne kilt and a ripped-sleeved tux and boots! Lowkey? Off-key? Both? All I know is his Richard Mille diamond crusted watch on his wrist cost a fortune, to say the least!
Zendaya thematic theatrical entrance with a Tommy Hilfiger blue holographic Cinderella gown complete with a fairy godmother-her stylist. The actress and Law Roach performed the classic Disney Cinderella staircase scene .That was camp!
Lavern Cox, drag baby! Black and romantic ruffles Christian Siriano gown and ice blue make-up was so chic champ!
Stealing the show to Billy Porter is becoming a habit and it gets grander every time thank you, Sam Ratelle, for pimping up the drag queen! He made a spectacular entry carried high up in a velvet litter by six men draped in golden pants and headpieces as the 49-old star dripped in a Sun Gold unitard with ten-foot wings!! And crowned it with a 24-karat bedazzled headpiece and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. Super Camp!
Lupita Nyong'o dragged in an see-me-through Versace gown with rainbow exaggerated sleeved shoulders and a matching rainbow fan in hand! Screaming camp was her outrageous shimmery metallic make-up and gold 'fro picks as hair accessories as she posed next to Trevor Noah and Tessa Thompson who was having 'a Gaga Moment'.
Serving fierce face and attitude was Lena Waithe who showed up with friend designer Kerby Jean-Raymond suited up and camped out a message, 'Black Drag Queens Invented Camp'!
