The World Cup has been quite unusual this year but not as unusual as the social media buzz about Gareth’s Mark & Spenser waistcoat fashion which he has been adorning since the England's group games in Russia 2018. I thought the player’s fancy-strange hairstyles would be all the fashion but then came Nigeria’s printed jerseys that were Aztec-prints related but which also portrayed a sense of African fashion, I was proud!
Back to the managers just like the rest of them, Gareth since his early days as a defender/midfielder and also as Middlesbrough manager in 2009 has not even once shown a hint of fashion taste. But came the 2018 World Cup and the touchline where he stood has been a sense of fascination as game after game he showed up with a toned down navy blue three-piece suit.
Mark & Spenser the British retailer and official brand responsible for clothing the English team has made remarkable sales, with waistcoats selling out in all their stores starting with their branch in Moscow, Russia. They have so far recorded a 35% increase in sales of waistcoats and (fashion) search engines such as Lyst has seen a 41% increase of search of the item since the 14th June 2018, CNN reported. At M&S website the three-piece suit is going for £624 and the waistcoat £65.
The bold fashion statement by the 47-year-old manager was not only a dapper stunt but a sagacity of elegance and professionalism. But was it enough to win him the World Cup this year?
Well, not in 2018. "They were denied their utopian moment," the reviewer commented. 'A man whose dress is neat, clean, simple, and appropriate, will pass muster anywhere,' says the Gentleman's book and muster he did pass as England has not been in the semi-finals since 1990.
Congratulations to Croatia as their go to the finals on Sunday at 6 pm taking on France. Stay tuned for WORLD CUP FASHION REPORT.
